How to Get a JPG From a Live Photo

Extract a still JPG from a Live Photo, choose a better frame, and understand the difference between turning Live off and downloading a separate image.

You need a normal JPG for a form, profile picture, or document, but the image you like is a Live Photo. There are two different jobs here: make the Live Photo appear still inside Photos, or create a separate JPG file you can upload elsewhere. Choose the one you actually need.

If you only want it to stop moving in Photos

Open the Live Photo on iPhone, tap Edit, then tap the Live Photo control. Apple says you can tap Live at the top to turn off the Live effect. This leaves you with the key photo as a still in Photos.

That is useful for viewing the item as a regular picture. It is not the same as downloading a named JPG file for a website. If you need a file, use an export or extraction method below.

If you need a separate JPG file

The Live Photo to JPG tool takes a .livp package or a HEIC/JPEG plus MOV pair. Choose the cover frame, or move through the movie to find a better moment, then download a separate JPG. The original Live Photo files are not changed, and the work runs locally in your browser.

There are two useful frame choices:

  • Cover frame: the image Photos normally shows before you press and hold. Choose it when you want the still to match what you already see.
  • Another frame: pause where the expression, focus, or action looks better. Choose this when someone blinked in the cover image.

Be aware that a frame taken from the movie has the movie's resolution. It can be ideal for a small web image, but it may have less detail than the original still photo. Check the output at its intended size, especially before printing.

On Mac: export the still from Photos

If the Live Photo is in Photos on Mac, select it and choose File → Export → Export [number] Photos. Apple's Mac export guide says the Photo Kind menu lets you choose JPEG. This is the direct route for the still image at your chosen export settings.

Export Unmodified Original does something different: it exports the Live Photo's original still and movie as two files. Pick that when you want to archive the original pair. If the still is HEIC and your destination specifically asks for JPG, use the JPEG export or the browser tool rather than merely renaming .heic to .jpg.

Quick decision guide

  • Stop playback in your iPhone library: Turn off Live in Photos.
  • Upload a plain JPG from a .livp or file pair: Extract a JPG.
  • Export the still from Photos on Mac: Export Photos → JPEG.
  • Keep every original part of the Live Photo: Export Unmodified Original.

Common questions

Does extracting a JPG delete the motion? No. It creates another file. Your original pair remains on your device.

Can I choose a frame other than the cover? Yes. The browser tool can grab a frame from the movie; iPhone Photos also lets you change the key photo within the Live Photo, as Apple documents.

Why won't a website take my HEIC? Some forms only accept JPG or PNG. Export a real JPEG and check the site's size and dimension rules before uploading.
